A bright, jaunty, and ethereal solo for Clarinet in Bb and Piano.
Pieces bearing the title “Choreographies” belong to a subset of works influenced by embodied performance and attention to the somatic elements of instrumental performance. They are influenced by movements of the body in specific, non-musical scenarios. The rhythms of these pieces are often created by overlapping small phrases of different lengths to create varying points of alignments that trigger melodic and harmonic changes against several clockwork-like ostinatos that provide a sense of stability to the mechanisms of the dance.
While composing this piece, the phrase “Amaretto Sour” was written at the top of my notes, as the piece’s rhapsodic formal construction was inspired by the cocktail. The first section of the piece relates to the twinkle of the refracting light as it bounces from the glass to the ice to the liquid. The second section incorporates more dissonance, harmonic complexity, and a slower rhythmic field to evoke a more introspective calmness – the left-hand of the piano mimicking the regular raising of a glass.
